The first warm rays of sunlight remind us that summer is on the way. As dreamers awake from their long hibernation it’s also time for your pool to cast aside the remnants of the cold winter months and get back into top form.
At the end of winter you’ll find leaves, dirt and other debris adorning last summer’s garden centrepiece.
A good old spring clean is on the agenda - but how do we start?
To make your job easier we’ve put together a list of the most important steps with help from the Planet Pool Water Treatment System:
1. Get rid of debris using surface leaf nets and deep leaf nets, so the drainage hole doesn’t get blocked.
2. Now empty your pool completely so you can deal with limescale deposits and stubborn dirt. It’s important to empty the pool to ensure that the cleaning products are effective and provide the basis for your water hygiene. Warning: This does not apply to inground pools where stability must be maintained.
3. To clean pool walls and bottom we recommend Planet Pool Stain and Scale Remover: This is an acid-based cleaner which works against limescale deposits and incrustations. It does not affect synthetic materials, but should not come into contact with materials that react to acid such as marble or pool fittings. Dilute the cleaner in water with a ratio of 1:3 to 1:10 depending on the strength required and rub the surfaces down. Allow 5-10 minutes for the cleaner to take effect and then repeat the process before rinsing with water. Be careful: You should use a liner sponge or soft liner brush. Do not let the cleaner dry, allow just enough time for it to do its job.
4. You can easily remove grime and fats that have built up on the waterline at the side of the pool with Planet Pool Waterline Cleaner: This alkaline cleaner is excellent at dealing with grime, fat and cosmetic dirt. You can apply the waterline cleaner diluted or undiluted using a sponge. Wet the area first and then rub it down with the cleaner. Allow a short time for it to take effect and then rinse with clean water. With stubborn dirt just repeat the process.
5. So your pool doesn’t turn into a bubble bath when you refill it it’s important that you rinse it out thoroughly after cleaning. It’s equally important that you only use appropriate pool cleaning products and not normal household cleaners as these can limit the effectiveness of water treatment products.
Certain basic ingredients of household cleaners do not react well with water treatment products.
Note about refilling your pool: Check your filter and change the filter sand if necessary. Then carry out disinfection/chlorine shock treatment.
After a few days you can proceed with the normal water treatment steps.
- Ensure the pH value is correct after every step in the treatment process (check regularly, at least one or twice a week).
- Remove leaves and debris using nets and vacuums.
- Check that the circulation pump is running smoothly and the filters are clean (backwash them once a week).
